PROPOSAL ON GENERAL EDUCATION
FOR ARTICLE XVIII. B. (reletter current XVIII. B.
and XVIII. C.) B.
General Education
(1) The Board and the Federation acknowledge a mandate to provide General Education to the College’s students and will cooperate in the continuation and improvement of General Education offerings. General Education has been described as the set of skills, or courses, or experiences that all faculty work together to provide for all students. According to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, “Institutions should identify and provide a recognizable core of general education that expresses the educational philosophy of the institution for each undergraduate degree program or cluster of degree programs. . . . A general education program – developed, owned, and reviewed by the institution’s faculty – should be purposeful, coherent, engaging, and rigorous. General education skills may be taught or developed as part of courses in the major, in separate courses, or through a decentralized distribution. . . . General education incorporates essential knowledge, cognitive abilities, and an understanding of values and ethics, and it enhances students’ intellectual growth.” (2) A General Education Coordinator
shall be chosen by mutual agreement between the Federation and the Vice
President for Academic Affairs, and shall receive full released time. The Coordinator shall implement the policies
on General Education recommended by the governance structure of the
College. S/he shall serve as an ex
officio member of the General Education Committee. The term of the General Education
Coordinator shall be for two years, which may be renewed for additional
two-year periods by mutual agreement of the Federation and the Vice President
for Academic Affairs. (3) In April of each year, a General
Education Committee composed of 13 faculty members will be chosen, by mutual
agreement between the Federation and the Vice President for Academic Affairs,
from the following groups of disciplines*: two from each of the following: Business and Technology, Humanities, Life Sciences, Math, Physical Sciences, and
